Murphy is the president and CEO of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Murphy has held this position since December 2008.

Murphy was born in Boston Massachusetts and raised in nearby Newton. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 1978 and from Harvard Law School in 1981. After working as a lawyer in private practice, she became the national legal director of the ACLU in 1991. In this role, she oversaw the organization’s litigation strategy and directed its federal legislative advocacy.

Murphy left the ACLU to become the general counsel of the National Organization for Women (NOW). In this position, she litigated a number of high-profile cases, including NOW v. Scheidler, which resulted in a $258 million judgment against anti-abortion protesters.

What did Murphy do on Facebook?

When it comes to online privacy, few people are as vigilant as Mark Zuckerberg. The Facebook CEO has been known to take extreme measures to keep his personal information safe and secure. So when it was revealed that Murphy, a Facebook employee, had been using his work account to snoop on people’s private messages, Zuckerberg was understandably upset.

Murphy was part of a team responsible for developing Facebook’s messaging feature. As part of his job, he had access to people’s private messages. However, instead of using this access for work purposes, Murphy reportedly used it to stalk women he was interested in.

Zuckerberg was made aware of the situation after one of the women Murphy had been stalking filed a complaint with the company. He immediately launched an investigation and found that Murphy had indeed been using his work account to stalk women.

Murphy was promptly fired from Facebook. In a statement, Zuckerberg said that “there’s no place for this kind of behavior at Facebook.” He also said that the company was taking steps to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again.

How did Bloomberg respond?

On November 7th, 2019, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the advocacy group Color of Change filed a federal civil rights complaint against Facebook. The complaint alleged that Facebook was allowing discrimination in housing, employment, and credit ads on its platform. The groups also called on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to investigate Facebook’s advertising practices.

Facebook issued the following statement:

We’re constantly working to improve our systems and will continue to do so. We take prompt action when we find advertisers in violation of our policies. In this case, we’re reviewing the complaint and will take appropriate action.

Bloomberg responded to the complaint by saying that Facebook’s advertising practices were “entirely consistent” with its own. Bloomberg also said that the company would “vigorously defend” itself against the complaint.
