
Kudremukh trek is located in Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka. “Kudremukh” in Karnataka means “horse’s face”. It is visible after an hour of trekking. Kudremukh mountain peak looks like a horse’s face from the outside. After seeing it, you will feel like it is closer but it will take you 3-4 hours more to reach that point. It is one of the most beautiful and amazing treks in India. It is a slightly challenging trek. There are almost dozens of streams. If you are a nature lover, this place would be best for you. This place is known for its biodiversity. You have to trek through the Shola forest to reach the peak. “Shola” is a name for grasslands that are viewable in the Western Ghats. Many wildlife animals live here like leopards, Deer, peacocks, Langur and many more. When you exit the forest section, you will see Ontimara. This area is surrounded by a wild canopy. You can also get a chance to watch Somvati Falls if you finish the trek earlier.
After passing through this area, Kudremukh valley becomes more visible. This is the most amazing and beautiful part of this trek. You will get a stunning view of the peak. This place is very windy.
After completing Shola forest, You will roll hills in front of you. If you visit this place in the monsoon or winter season, you will see the mist over the mountains.
Total Distance:- 18 km
It has an altitude of about 6207 ft.
It is Karnataka’s third tallest peak.
You can complete this trek in one day if you have good endurance and walking speed.
Camping is not allowed here.
You will need permission to do this trek as it is a part of Kudremukh National Park.
It has a fee of about Rs 600 per person.
SIGHTSEEINGS AT KUDREMUKH TREK
- Waterfalls:-It is such beautiful scenery to see. You can hear them from a distance as they flow with maximum speed.
- Animals:- You will encounter deer, peacocks, crabs, and leeches here more than another animal.
TIPS WHILE TREKKING HERE
- Don’t forget to wear proper trekking shoes here. Since there are lots of streams here, trekking shoes will help you cross them easily.
- Apply Dettol or any other antiseptic before starting the trek to avoid leeches. You can also put snuff powder or salt in your socks to prevent leeches.
- Only 50 people are allowed to go on this trek in a day. So, make sure you are early to the forest office.
- You can also use trekking poles here as it will be easier for you to climb.
- There are no restaurants except a few small stalls that sell snacks and refreshments. So, take your own food with you when going on this trek
BEST TIME TO DO KUDREMUKH TREK
You can do this trek between June and February. During winter and monsoon seasons, you will see many small streams and bamboo shrubs that are tall enough to touch the sky.
It is advised not to go for this trek in summer as you have to trek in the open sky.
The best time to go on this trek is as early as possible in the morning. It will take around 4-5 hours to reach the peak and again 2-3 hours to return.
DIFFICULT SECTIONS IN KUDREMUKH TREK
- Trekking in the forest area may be a little tough. The forest area is usually slippery. It will be easier if you wear proper trekking shoes and carry a trekking pole.
- Crossing the streams may be a little tricky for you. They are also slippery.
SOME DON’TS WHILE TREKKING
- Don’t overpack things. Take only those which are essential for you during the trek.
- Don’t spray excess perfumes and if okay don’t use it even in a small quantity. Aromatics attract flies and insects. So, it is advised not to spray aromatics while going on a trek.
- Don’t drink alcohol or smoke during the trek.
- Don’t go away from the group. We have seen it in movies and think that it looks cool to go alone but it will really be difficult for you if you get lost during trekking.
